立秋 Li Qiu - Start of Autumn & Back-to-School

Lì Qiū 立秋 - Marking the Arrival of Autumn

The Start of Autumn " Lì Qiū 立秋" falls around August 7th and it celebrates change and transition. In ancient China, " Lì Qiū  立秋" was important to farmers as it signaled the time to prepare for the upcoming harvest and cooler weather. This solar term embodies the natural rhythm of the earth, symbolizing the equilibrium between light and darkness, warmth and chill.

Embracing Change: Symbolism and Traditions

Balancing Yin and Yang: " Lì Qiū 立秋" marks a pivotal point where the balance between Yin and Yang begins to shift. Yin, the passive and cool element, starts to grow stronger as Yang, the active and warm element, begins to wane. This balance mirrors the transformation of nature, where vibrant green leaves transition into the warm hues of autumn. We wrote another article explaining 節氣 - 24 Chinese Solar Terms and what to expect each season.
During this time is Qixi Festival (七夕节, Qīxī Jié), also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day, it celebrates the legendary love story between the Cowherd and Weaver Girl.

Seasonal Foods: Chinese food traditions reflect the change of seasons during " Lì Qiū 立秋." As the weather cools down, people enjoy foods that nourish and warm the body, like root vegetables, nuts, and soups. This practice aligns with the principle of maintaining harmony between the body and the natural environment.
